Overview
Besides the biggest names, several large IT services and engineering firms hire thousands of freshers each year: HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, LTIMindtree, Mphasis, Hexaware, Persistent, Coforge, Zensar and more. Each has its own programs and brand, but their fresher processes share a common shape, so preparing for one prepares you for most.
Some also run early-career programs where candidates train while working, sometimes with a partner university. Eligibility and obligations differ a lot, so read the terms carefully before you accept.
The common structure
- Application on the company's careers page or through your campus placement cell
- Online assessment: generally a mix of aptitude, logical reasoning, English, and technical MCQs, with coding in many drives. Some companies also add a voice or communication assessment.
- Technical interview: projects, language basics, OOP, DBMS and SQL, and simple programming
- Managerial or HR interview: communication, attitude, location and shift flexibility, offer discussion
LTIMindtree, Mphasis and Persistent commonly lean towards more technical questions, while others weigh aptitude and communication more. Always check the current announcement.
What tends to differ between companies
| Area | Often emphasised |
|---|---|
| Large service firms | Aptitude, communication, fundamentals, flexibility to relocate |
| Mid-size engineering and product-services firms | More coding, DSA basics, database and cloud knowledge |
| Early-career or work-study programs | Academic record, aptitude, commitment, and agreement terms |
One preparation plan for several drives
Weeks 1–3: aptitude and English. Daily timed practice and a short reading habit (aptitude guide).
Weeks 2–6: coding fundamentals. Cover arrays, strings, hashing, recursion and sorting, then simple trees. Follow the DSA study plan at a lighter pace.
Weeks 3–6: core subjects. SQL queries, DBMS concepts, OS, networking and OOP (core subjects).
Weeks 5–7: a project you can defend. Build or polish one real project you can describe end to end (portfolio projects).
Final week: mock interviews. Practise the introduction and project walkthrough aloud (interview checklist).
Interview themes you can expect
- "Tell me about yourself" and "Why this company?"
- Explain your final-year project and the technology choices
- Difference between abstract class and interface; SQL joins; what is normalisation
- A simple program, such as checking a palindrome, finding the second largest number or reversing a linked list
- Are you comfortable with the technology stack of the project you may get?
Tips
- Track deadlines and test dates in a spreadsheet, since you may be applying to many companies.
- Customise your answers: mention one specific thing about each company's work or services.
- If you receive offers from several companies, compare the role, location, training, bond or agreement and growth, not only the package.
- Check that every email is from the official company domain.
Common mistakes
- Applying to everything but preparing for nothing
- Ignoring service agreement or training-bond terms until after the offer
- Believing agents who claim to arrange offers for a fee (scam guide)
Frequently asked questions
Which company should I prioritise?
Prioritise by the role, the training, the location and the agreement terms, not only by brand or package. Apply to several drives, since each result is independent.
What are early-career programs that combine work and study?
They let you work while studying for a degree through a partner institution. They suit some people well, but they also come with commitments and costs, so read the terms carefully and talk to current participants before you decide.
Do these companies ask for coding in the first round?
Many include coding in the online assessment, and some lighter drives focus on aptitude and communication first. The announcement usually lists the sections.
How can I prepare for several companies at the same time?
Build a common base: aptitude, one programming language, SQL and OOP basics, and one project you can explain in depth. Then spend the last week on company-specific details.
What if I get an offer I am not sure about?
Compare it with your alternatives, ask about the training period and agreement in writing and take time (within the deadline) to decide.

What the company's own pages say (checked 28 October 2026)
HCLTech, confirmed on HCLTech campus hiring and freshers:
- The listed stages are shortlisting, a business/technical interview, an HR interview, then decision and offer, with at least two interview rounds. Roles include Graduate Engineer Trainee, Graduate Trainee and Post Graduate Trainee.
- For its engineering fresher program (offers tiered as Ascend, Momentum and Polaris), an older page describes a test with a cognitive section, a coding or technical section and a Versant English speaking and listening test, and an academic cut-off of 70% (65% for some locations).
- HCLTech states it never asks for fees and will not interview over instant-messaging apps.
Mphasis, confirmed on Mphasis careers:
- Campus applicants are filtered on a minimum average academic score of 60%, then face an aptitude test, a personal interview and a communication test. Technical roles involve two interview rounds, and shortlisted candidates typically finish in 10 to 15 days. Tier 1 and 2 campuses may use hackathons and coding tests. Passing candidates may first receive a letter of intent.
Tech Mahindra and LTIMindtree: no fresher round-by-round process is published on the pages we could reach. Both warn about fraud. Tech Mahindra says offer letters carry a QR code linking to its portal and that an interview panel without a Tech Mahindra ID card should not be trusted. LTIMindtree says it charges no fee and that offer letters are downloaded from a managed portal, not sent as links.
Not confirmed: the Hexaware, Persistent, Coforge and Zensar processes, which we did not check. Cut-offs and formats change every year.
Latest changes (2025–2026)
Updated 28 October 2026.
- HCLTech recruited 6,136 freshers in the September 2026 quarter (up from 1,056 in the June quarter), with about 15% in an elite engineer category focused on specialised AI engineering and customer-facing roles. It expects to hire 10,000 to 11,000 graduates in FY27, according to news coverage of its results.
- Other firms in this guide did not publish comparable fresher figures that we could verify.
