Flipkart and Indian Product Companies: Hiring Process and Prep

Overview
India has a large number of product companies and startups: e-commerce, food delivery, payments, mobility, edtech and software-as-a-service. Examples include Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, Razorpay, PhonePe, Paytm, CRED, Meesho and Freshworks. They hire fresh graduates through campus drives and, more often, experienced engineers through direct applications and referrals.
These companies usually test problem solving and engineering depth more than aptitude. Their interviews are closer to those of global tech companies than to mass-recruitment drives.
A typical flow
Details vary by company and level, but experiences commonly describe:
- Resume screening or referral
- Online coding test (campus and some off-campus hiring): algorithmic problems with a time limit
- Data structures and algorithms interviews: one or two rounds, 45–60 minutes, with problems from medium to hard
- Machine coding round (popular at several Indian product companies): you are given 60–120 minutes to build a small working system in code, for example a parking lot, a snake-and-ladder game, a splitwise-style expense manager or a rate limiter. Evaluation covers working functionality, clean and extensible design, naming and edge cases.
- Design round: low-level design (classes and relationships) for early-career roles, and high-level system design for experienced engineers
- Hiring manager round: past projects, ownership, decisions and cultural fit
- HR and offer
What to prepare
DSA: arrays, strings, hash maps, two pointers, sliding window, trees, graphs, heaps, backtracking and dynamic programming. Practise medium and some hard problems (DSA study plan).
Machine coding: this surprises many candidates. Practise building small applications from scratch in 90 minutes. Key habits:
- Read requirements and list the entities and operations
- Start with a simple working version, then extend
- Use clear classes, interfaces and separation of concerns
- Handle invalid input and add a few sample test runs in
main - Keep the code readable; you will be asked to explain and extend it
Learn the principles in OOP and design principles.
System design (experienced): practise designing common systems and discussing trade-offs (system design basics).
Projects and ownership: be ready to discuss what you built, why you chose that design, what failed and what you learnt (project guide).
How these differ from service-company drives
| Product companies | Service companies | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Algorithms, design, engineering depth | Aptitude, fundamentals, communication |
| Rounds | Fewer candidates, more technical rounds | Large-scale tests, then interviews |
| Evaluation | Quality of thinking and code | Cut-offs and consistency |
| Hiring | Referrals and direct applications matter | Mass campus and off-campus drives |

Tips
- Get a referral when possible; it helps your resume reach a recruiter. Read cover letter and referral message templates.
- Keep an updated GitHub and a resume that shows impact (experienced resume guide).
- Practise coding in the language you will use, without autocomplete.
- If you do not know a design answer, structure your thinking and discuss trade-offs.
Common mistakes
- Preparing only LeetCode-style problems and ignoring machine coding or design
- Writing working code that is hard to read or extend
- Not knowing how your own projects work in depth
- Being unclear about why you want to join a particular company

What the company's own pages say (checked 28 October 2026)
Flipkart, confirmed on its official SDE interview guide (an undated PDF) and How we hire page:
- Before the onsite there may be an exploratory discussion with the hiring manager and sometimes a technical phone screen.
- The onsite for software engineers covers machine coding, problem solving and data structures, design (system design and object-oriented design), team fitment and culture fitment.
- Machine coding is listed as 120 minutes: about 15 minutes before coding, 90 minutes of coding and 15 minutes after, when you demo the program and the interviewer runs test cases. The problem-solving round usually has 1 to 3 problems.
- Flipkart states a 6-month cooling period if you do not clear an interview.
Not confirmed: the processes at Swiggy, Zomato, Razorpay, PhonePe, Paytm, CRED, Meesho and Freshworks. We did not check them, so machine-coding timings elsewhere (such as 60 minutes) come from candidate reports.
Please note: hiring processes change between campuses, drives and years, and companies update their rounds without notice. This guide describes the commonly reported structure so you know what to expect and how to prepare. Always confirm the current process on the company's official careers page or in your invitation email. This site is not affiliated with any company mentioned, and company names belong to their owners.
