Experienced Engineer Resume Guide: Show Impact, Not Just Duties

The difference from a fresher resume
A fresher resume proves potential. An experienced resume proves impact. Recruiters and hiring managers want to see what changed because you were on the team: faster systems, lower costs, fewer incidents, shipped features, mentored engineers. Duties ("responsible for backend development") do not tell them that.
Length and order
- 2–5 years: one page, two at most
- 5–12 years: two pages
- Leadership or very long careers: two pages, still focused on the last 8–10 years
Order:
- Header (name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn, GitHub)
- Summary (3 lines)
- Skills
- Experience (reverse chronological)
- Projects (only if they add something)
- Education and certifications
Put education after experience once you have more than two years of work.
Summary: three lines that sell
State your role and years, your strongest areas and one measurable highlight:
"Backend engineer with 5 years of experience building high-traffic payment services in Java and Spring Boot. Led the migration of a monolith to microservices handling 3 million requests per day. Strong in API design, SQL performance tuning and mentoring."
Experience: the impact formula
Each role: company, title, dates, location, then 3–6 bullets. Write each bullet using:
Action verb + what you did + how (technology or method) + measurable result.
| Weak (duty) | Strong (impact) |
|---|---|
| Responsible for the payments API | Redesigned the payments API with idempotency keys and retries, cutting duplicate charges by 99% |
| Worked on database performance | Reduced average report query time from 40s to 3s by adding composite indexes and rewriting two joins |
| Part of the migration team | Led a team of four to migrate the order service to Kubernetes, reducing deployment time from 2 hours to 15 minutes |
| Helped new joiners | Mentored three junior engineers; all were promoted within 18 months |
If you cannot measure precisely, use honest approximations ("~30% faster") or describe scale ("serving 2M users"). Never invent numbers; you may be asked how you measured them.
Skills section
Group by category and list what you actually use now:
- Languages: Java, Python, SQL
- Frameworks: Spring Boot, FastAPI
- Data and messaging: PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka
- Cloud and DevOps: AWS (EC2, S3, RDS), Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions
- Practices: system design, code review, CI/CD, test automation
Match important keywords from the job description (where true) so that screening software and recruiters see them.
Projects and open source
Include only if they add something your jobs do not show: a notable side project, open-source contributions, a published app or a technical blog. Link to them.
What to cut
- Responsibilities that every engineer in your role has
- Old, irrelevant technologies from your first job (unless the role needs them)
- Hobbies, photo, personal details and references
- Tools you used once
- Long paragraphs; keep to bullets
Special situations
- Career gap: state it briefly and honestly (health, family, study, travel, upskilling) and mention what you did in that time.
- Frequent job changes: group short contracts, mention "contract" where relevant and focus on outcomes.
- Switching technology: lead the summary with your target stack and show relevant projects or certifications.
- Moving into management: highlight team size, hiring, delivery results and cross-team work.
Tailor each application
Spend ten minutes per application: reorder bullets so the most relevant come first, mirror the role's language and delete what does not help. Keep a master resume with everything, and cut from it for each job. Check the ATS-friendly resume checklist.
Final checks
- Every bullet shows action and result
- Dates and titles are consistent and accurate (they will be verified)
- Links work and your profiles match the resume
- No spelling mistakes; read it aloud once
- Saved as a PDF with a clear name
