Job titles overlap, and companies use them differently. This guide compares the roles by what you actually do all day, so you can choose with your eyes open.
The roles side by side
| Role | Main job | Time with customers | Coding depth | Typical output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software engineer | Build and maintain a product used by many | Low | High | Features in a core product |
| Forward deployed engineer | Make the product work for one customer's problem | High | Medium to high | Working custom solutions |
| Solutions / sales engineer | Help win deals with demos and technical answers | High | Low to medium | Demos, proofs of concept, answers |
| Implementation / deployment engineer | Set up and configure the product for customers | High | Low to medium | Configured, live customer accounts |
| AI engineer | Build products on top of language models | Low to medium | High | AI features and pipelines |
| ML engineer | Train, serve and monitor machine learning models | Low | High | Models and ML infrastructure |
| Data scientist | Analyse data and build models for decisions | Medium | Medium | Analyses, experiments, models |
| Technical consultant | Advise and deliver projects for clients | High | Low to medium | Plans, reports, delivered projects |
These are typical patterns, not rules. Companies use the same title for different jobs, so always read the job description.
The FDE sits in the middle: more coding than a solutions engineer, more customer contact than a software engineer.
How each differs in daily life
- Software engineer: you own parts of a codebase for years. Customers reach you through product managers.
- FDE: you own a customer outcome for weeks or months. You write real code and also speak to the people using it.
- Solutions engineer: you prepare demos and answer technical questions before a sale. Delivery usually belongs to someone else.
- AI engineer: you spend time on prompts, retrieval, evaluation and reliability. Read AI engineer vs ML engineer vs data scientist.
- Consultant: you analyse and advise, and often use client tools. See consulting and Big Four tech hiring.
Questions to ask yourself
- Do I enjoy talking to non-engineers every day? If not, lean to software or ML engineering.
- Do I like ambiguity? FDEs and consultants live in it. Product engineers get clearer tickets.
- Do I want to go deep on one system or stay broad? Depth suits product engineering, breadth suits FDE.
- Do I mind travel or customer pressure? FDE and consulting roles can include both.
- Do I want a salary-first or learning-first start? Services and consulting roles are easier to enter, and FDE or AI roles may need stronger proof of skill.
Career paths from an FDE role
- Into product: FDEs know customer pain better than most, so product management and product engineering are natural moves.
- Into AI engineering: the day-to-day overlaps strongly.
- Into solutions architecture or technical leadership: a customer-facing track.
- Into founding a company: many FDEs spot the repeatable problems.
What if you are a fresher?
Pure FDE openings often expect experience, so freshers frequently start in a neighbouring role (software engineer at a customer-facing product company, implementation or solutions engineer, associate engineer in a services firm's AI team) and move across. See how to get an FDE job in India.
