Overview
Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC are professional-services firms. They are best known for audit, tax and advisory, but each employs a large number of technology professionals in India: technology consulting, cyber security, data and analytics, cloud, ERP (such as SAP and Oracle), risk technology and quality engineering. Fresher titles include Analyst, Associate Consultant and Technology Analyst.
Compared with pure IT services firms, the work is more client-facing, with strong emphasis on communication, structured thinking and business understanding.
The usual stages
Typical flow, with differences by firm and role:
- Application or campus shortlisting: resume screening based on academics and relevant skills
- Online assessment: commonly aptitude and reasoning, verbal ability and sometimes a technical or role-specific test (for example SQL, programming basics, networking or security)
- Group discussion or case exercise (in some drives): a business scenario discussed in a group or presented individually
- Technical interview: your role-related knowledge, projects and certifications
- HR or manager/partner interview: communication, motivation, flexibility and cultural fit
Some firms combine rounds, and some campus drives skip the group discussion.
What interviewers look for
- Clear communication: explaining technical ideas to non-technical people
- Structured thinking: breaking a problem into parts before answering
- Curiosity about business: why a client would need this technology
- Learning ability and teamwork: consulting changes projects often
- Integrity and professionalism: these firms put strong weight on ethics
How to prepare
Aptitude and verbal: timed sets for three weeks (aptitude guide).
Case thinking: practise simple cases such as "A retailer's online sales are falling. What would you analyse?" Use a framework: understand the goal, list possible causes (traffic, conversion, price, competition, service), pick data to check, then recommend actions. For data roles, combine this with data analyst skills.
Technical depth for your role:
- Cyber security: networking, common attacks, basic tools (roadmap)
- Data and analytics: SQL, Excel, a BI tool (SQL practice)
- Cloud and DevOps: Linux, a cloud platform, CI/CD (roadmap)
- Development: your main language and DSA basics (study plan)
- ERP: understand business processes such as procure-to-pay and order-to-cash
Communication: practise explaining one technical concept in simple words, such as what a database index is, in under one minute.
Interview questions you may see
- "Walk me through your resume."
- "Why consulting instead of a product company?" (service vs product)
- "Describe a time you led or worked in a team" (STAR method)
- "How would you explain cloud computing to a non-technical client?"
- Role-specific technical questions
Tips
- Dress and speak professionally, even for online interviews.
- Read about the firm's technology services and current news before the interview.
- Prepare a thoughtful question for the interviewer about training, projects or mentorship.
- Keep your resume to one page and ensure every item is accurate (resume guide); these firms verify credentials.
Common mistakes
- Going into a group discussion planning to dominate rather than contribute
- Answers with no structure
- Overstating certifications or skills
- Trusting messages from people who claim to "place" you for money (scam red flags)
