The honest picture
Forward deployed engineer roles exist in India, with Bengaluru reported as the busiest city, followed by Delhi-NCR and Hyderabad. But there are fewer of them than software engineer roles, and many ask for some experience. Press reports say Indian IT and consulting firms are hiring more FDE-style engineers as they take AI projects from pilot to production. The key is to search for the right titles and to use a nearby role as a stepping stone if you are new.
Titles to search
Companies do not always use the words "forward deployed." Search for:
- Forward Deployed Engineer and Forward Deployed AI Engineer
- Customer Engineer
- Solutions Engineer
- Deployment Engineer and Implementation Engineer
- Applied AI Engineer
- Technical Consultant (AI), and Associate Engineer in AI delivery teams
Read the job description: if it mentions working with customers, integrating systems and shipping solutions, it is the same kind of job.

A fresher's route in
- Start with a nearby job. Software engineer at a customer-facing product company, implementation engineer, solutions engineer or associate engineer in a services AI team.
- Build three customer-style projects from the portfolio guide.

If you are experienced
