People say "AI jobs" as if they were one thing. They are not. Here is how the main roles differ in what they build, what they need to know and how to prepare.
One-line definitions
- AI engineer: builds products on top of existing models (language, vision, speech) using APIs, retrieval, agents and evaluation.
- ML engineer: trains, ships and maintains machine learning models and the infrastructure around them.
- Data scientist: analyses data, runs experiments and builds models to support decisions.
- Prompt engineer: writes and tests prompts. In many job listings, prompting appears as a skill within another role (AI engineer, product or support). Some companies do use the title, so read each job description.
Comparison table
| AI engineer | ML engineer | Data scientist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main output | AI features and pipelines | Trained models and ML systems | Insights and models |
| Trains models from scratch? | Rarely | Often | Sometimes |
| Maths depth | Light to medium | Medium to high | Medium to high |
| Software engineering depth | High | High | Medium |
| Key tools | Python and TypeScript, model APIs, vector search, evals | PyTorch or TensorFlow, MLOps, GPUs | Python, SQL, statistics, notebooks |
| Interview focus | Applied LLM design, RAG, evals, system design | ML theory, model design, deployment | Statistics, SQL, case studies |
What an AI engineer's week looks like
- Improve a retrieval step so answers use the right documents
- Add an evaluation set and track whether a change helped (LLM evals)
- Fix a failure where the model ignores an instruction or invents a fact
- Cut cost and latency with caching, smaller models or shorter prompts
- Put guardrails around actions an agent can take
- Deploy, monitor and write documentation
Which one should you choose?
| If you... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Enjoy building apps and APIs, and want to ship fast | AI engineer |
| Enjoy maths, training models and systems for scale | ML engineer |
| Enjoy business questions, statistics and storytelling with data | Data scientist |
| Enjoy customer problems and variety | Forward deployed engineer |
Do you need a PhD or heavy maths?
For AI engineering, no. Strong software engineering matters more than advanced mathematics. For research and many ML engineering roles, deeper maths helps. Learn the maths you need as problems demand it. See the data scientist and ML engineer roadmap.
Can you move between them?
Yes. Software engineers move into AI engineering fastest. Data scientists often move into ML engineering by learning deployment. AI engineers who like customer work move into FDE roles.
What to learn first, whichever you choose
Python, SQL, Git, APIs and clean code. See the Python guide and Git guide.
